![]() Testing this is simple: do a traceroute to multiple random IP addresses, and if you're affected you'll notice they always succeed on the second hop, and always with a very low RTT (even publically-unroutable RFC1918 IPs like 172.16.0.1). ![]() Now all my tracerts look similar to this:ġ 8 ms 5 ms 5 ms FIOS_Quantum_ Ģ 8 ms 6 ms 6 ms frog.qrq. FYI Windows tracert does not work on many Fios connections, including yours /u/fusionfoto. Id also think about some tunnels involved possibly In some cases, a tunnel interface can bring one hop visible in a traceroute output twice. My tracerts used to look similar to the above. Router1tracer vrf vpn-1111 10.135.47.30 probe 1 If you still see the same hop in the output, you would know its received from a single packet sent with particular TTL value. This could mean that the packets have traveled to. I have noticed lately that tracert span only two hops. The packets travel along the Verizon network for two hops and then jump to a router that belongs to alter. ![]() If I skip 2 hops, I get satisfactory results. Here’s the modified tcpdump command and filter expression:Feel free to skip this section, it’s not required for the examNow let’s see how things look using ICMP Echo Response messages instead (a different source host is used). Below, if I don't skip any hops, I get the behavior described previously. Now let’s see how things look using ICMP Echo Response messages instead (a different source host is used). 1 You dont want or need to do a traceroute to a local device on your network. I wrote a NETTRACE.EXE which allows for skipping some hops. ![]() But if the ping doesn't expire there, it's forwarded (with TTL intact) and the trace proceeds as desired. No matter the destination, it always shows upstream gateway as the final hop. If the ping expires there, it responds with the IP of the desired destination (and the RTT is impossibly low). I noticed that Verizon is now intercepting and breaking traceroute (on Windows) and mtr. Here, the (only) problem seems to be at the second hop. I have the same problem (in Syracuse, NY) as the OP. ![]()
